Toranaga you sneaky old bastard, you!

 


I just watched Shogun episode 8.  This show just keeps getting better and better!

The suspense is just building!!!

I am very tempted to re-watch the 1980's adaptation (I watched it when I was a kid in the late 80's) to find out what's gonna happen.  lol

But NOOOOOO, I will just be patient and wait to see the slow and delicate unfolding of Toranaga's hidden schemes!  

They ALMOST had me convinced that Toranaga had really accepted defeat.  I tried to remember what happened in the old 80's show...but my memory is hazy lol.   I thought, this is all bogus, he's just playing. THEN his top general/bestie commits sepuku!  WTF!!!!  I thought damn, he has trully accepted defeat for sure.   Nearly had me 100% convinced!  But THEN....he gives the lowdown (well as much as he could) to Mariko....it WAS ALL THEATER!!!!!!!   Yes his bestie gave his life to their cause....but I think he figured he's already too old and feeble, one way or another he'd be toast soon, so might as well make it count real well.   So boom!  Now all of Ishido's and Ochiba's spies (I am sure they have many) are totally convinced that Toranaga has accepted defeat and is ready to go to Osaka and off himself after his 49 day mourning period for his (idiot) son, Nagakado, who died in a most ignoble way.  

Still suprised he trusted NO ONE (ok except MAYBE his late bestie) but Mariko about his real plans. Now the Anjin's ship is on the move to where it needs to go (with his enemies all clueless about it).   Toranaga has anticipated how those around him would act/react and based his plans on those predictions!  Now all those guns and cannons gonna be exactly where he wants them to be, just waiting to be fired...good luck Ishido, your ass has got a big giant target on it, and you don't have a clue!  

Toranaga you old bastard!  You have plans within plans within plans, your plans have their own baby plans!  Wheels within wheels!   He don't just got an 8-fold fence, no...this smart old bastard got a shit ton of layers to his fence and only he truly knows what the heck he is up to!  And we call can't wait to see his devious plan unfold!

GREAT Mini-Series, BUT UNDERWHELMING Ending!

  So Shogun has finished it's run.  I just finished watching the finale (A Dream of a Dream).  Now, the penultimate episode (Crimson Sky) was incredible, EPIC event! So naturally I thought, if episode 9 is this AWESOME....I can't WAIT FOR the finale...episode 10!   BUT boy was I WRONG.  T he finale was an underwhelming letdown! After all the build up, all the anticipation, THERE IS NO FINAL BIG BATTLE!!! You get lame hints of what will happen...BUT well that was it! Like what the heck?!! I mean, yeah they were faithful to the book in that regard, but really? Surely they could have improved on that like they did with other things.  I was also bit sad they did not change Mariko's fate in episode 9 (I already knew what happens to her from the  80s adaptation)...but at least they improved how it happens a bit.  It is TOO BAD is a ONE SEASON show, with no plans for a season 2.
